Why SLDBatt?
The energy transition is one of the greatest societal challenges of the coming decades. Achieving international, European, and national climate goals requires a fundamental transformation of the energy sector and Dutch industry. Decarbonisation of these sectors can only be achieved through extensive electrification based on renewable energy sources rather than fossil fuels.
Solar and wind energy will provide the largest contribution to the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy. However, the inherent intermittency of these renewable sources creates a structural mismatch between energy supply and demand. Addressing this temporal imbalance is essential to ensure system reliability and enable further integration of renewable energy. This requires the development and deployment of long-duration energy storage (LDES) through innovative battery technologies.
What is SLDBatt?
SLDBatt stands for Sustainable Long-Duration Batteries.
Within the project, Dutch companies and knowledge institutions are developing five innovative long-duration battery technologies specifically aimed at industrial electrification and grid stabilisation, making effective use of locally available resources such as salt and water.
In addition, a Centre of Expertise (CoE) will be established to lay the foundation for a robust national and international LDES ecosystem.
What Will SLDBatt Deliver?
- Validated battery pilots based on three LDES technologies using abundant, non-critical materials (TRL 6-7)
- A database containing data from all pilots, accessible to end users for information sharing, standardisation, and benchmarking purposes, including a set of LDES benchmarks and protocols
- A Centre of Expertise dedicated to sharing knowledge on techno-economic performance, manufacturability, scalability opportunities, analyses, and recommendations for the future LDES market
- Insights into policy and regulatory frameworks and information on specific use cases
- Educational materials for the next generation of battery specialists

Innovations within SLDBatt
- Validated LDES innovations using abundant, low-cost, and locally available materials at TRL 6-7 level
- More than 8 hours of energy storage at a cost below €50/kWh
- Pilot projects for industrial applications and grid stabilisation: NaCl (table salt)-Aluminium battery (Exergy Storage), Acid-Base battery (Aquabattery), Hydrogen-Iron flow battery (Elestor)
- A unique Centre of Expertise
