REACT-EU project

Duration: September 1, 2021 to October 30, 2023

The aim of the REACT-EU project is to develop future technical competences and build a supply chain through a public-private partnership through battery pack/system development, testing and simulation and assembly/manufacturing activities.

Innovative battery technology is indispensable for realizing and accelerating the energy transition and greening. Due to the increasing electrification of transport, the use of batteries will increase sharply now and in the coming years, with the focus so far mainly on improving the functionality of the battery. In the transition to sustainable energy (solar and wind), batteries are also an increasingly important link in finding the balance between the generation and use of sustainable energy.

The essential role that batteries play in this transition, in combination with the critical materials required for the production and operation of these batteries, require an integrated and strategic approach.

Project content

In concrete terms, the accumulated knowledge will result in improved battery packs and pilot assembly lines in preparation for serial battery production in 2023. This project will thereby serve as a foundation for developing the broader battery ecosystem of the Battery Competence Center, with the partners seeing that several projects will be necessary. to build up a broad set of competencies. The REACT-EU project will serve as a basis for building parts of the required competences.

This React-EU project is made possible in part by the European Fund for Regional Development and the province of North Brabant in the context of OPZuid.

Important (technical) project results

  1. Structural cooperation and program structure in which several innovative projects can be developed in the battery chain;
  2. Delivery of a pilot production line for prototyping – DAF Trucks & TNO on the Automotive Campus Helmond;
  3. Delivery of a pilot production line for serial battery production – VDL & ELEO;
  4. Knowledge base that enables companies to make better choices in the procurement, development, production, treatment, (re)use and recycling of batteries.

The REACT-EU will act as a foundation to develop the wider battery ecosystem of the Battery Competence Cluster - NL, with the partners recognizing that multiple projects will be needed to build a broad set of competences.

Content of the knowledge base

  1. Modular design of battery modules and packs;
  2. Circular design and recyclability of battery modules and packs;
  3. Upscaling to (automated) series production;
  4. Testing battery modules and packs.
